Michael Green (1834-1904) (son of Luke Greene, County Clare) arrived in Australia in 1854.

Eight years later, as a miner in Beaufort, at the age of 28, he married Ellen Murphy, 29 years old, in Ellen Murphy's house in Beaufort. Their marriage certificate (#2708) was witnessed by William Green (my great grandfather) and Ellen Kelly (about whom I could find nothing). The following year, Michael witnessed the marriage of my great grandfather, William, to Bridget Duggan. I presume that Luke and William were cousins.

Ellen Murphy
Michael Green's bride, Ellen Murphy (1832/8-1917), was a 'housekeeper' from Beaufort, and originally from Kilkenny. Her parents were Richard Murphy and Ann Quirk.

Michael Breen
Ellen had been married before, in about 1853 (not in Victoria?) to a Michael Breen (the similarity of the names resulted in much confusion with Michael Green, then and now).
She had three children to Michael Breen:
- Martin (born in Kilmore in 1854) (#4952),
- Richard Henry, (1857-1862): died aged 5, the year Ellen was remarried)(#5239), and
- Mary Teresa (not on Pioneers index) (all three had died by 1874)
Michael Green's death certificate lists these three children, incorrectly, along with his own (listed below) as his children.
Michael Breen died (in Kilmore?) in 1858 (1856? #13532?).

Their children
It appears also that Michael Green and Ellen had an illegitimate child, Flora Adelaide, in 1861, in Beaufort (#15273), the year before their marriage. Deceased before 1874 (whether she married, and the place of her death, is unknown).

Wineford Teresa	1872 in Chute #1322 . Whether married, and place & time of death unknown.
Ellen Mary Elizabeth	1874 in Chute #7658

Luke and Patrick moved to Western Australia in the 1890s to escape the Victorian Depression. Ellen, after her marriage, also moved and raised her family there .
Michael Green died at the age of 70 in Geelong 26/6/1904, and is buried in the Catholic section of the Geelong cemetery (#5036), a year before William Green. His death certificate gives his age as 76, but this would mean he was born in 1828, not 1834. It is more likely that the year of birth (and age) are correct on his marriage certificate.
Ellen, his widow, moved to her daughter Annie's farm at Wonwandah, outside Horsham, and died at the age of 87 in Horsham 13/7/1917 (#8932).
