Paddy Hannan
Did William Green, my great grandfather, or Luke (above, son of Michael), know Paddy Hannan, the man who discovered gold in Kalgoorlie in 1894?
Paddy was born in 1842 (two years after my great grandfather William) in Quin, near Ennis, County Clare (25 miles from Ballycotton, where, we believe, William was born). Tom Flanagan, Paddy's partner, was also from County Clare.
In 1970, a WA local said about Paddy "The Armstrong family on a farm near Ennis in County Clare, Ireland, are proud to have known him. His father was evicted from a nearby cottage, and having nowhere else to go, had been given a small hut rent free by Mr. Armstrong's father. Here Paddy was born... the only literate one of all the labourer's sons" (p.159 'The Golden Miles', H.H. Wilson).
In 1862 or 1863 Paddy emigrated to Australia. He worked as a deep miner in the gold mines of Ballarat, Bendigo and surrounding districts. According to books about Paddy, between 1867 and 1880 he spent six years in New Zealand, mining and prospecting. According to the Shipping records, Paddy went to New Zealand in 1867, the year after Michael and the same year as my great grandfather, but in a different boat and arrived at a different port (his age is given as 41! If he was born in 1842, he should have been 25!).
In 1880 Paddy joined a rush to NSW, and prospected around Queensland and Tasmania. In 1886 he joined a rush to South Australia, and 1888/89 went to Western Australia prospecting and mining around Parkers Range, south of Southern Cross, between Perth and Coolgardie.
At the age of 50, in 1892, he left and joined the rush to Coolgardie, with thousands of others. In June 1893, he left Coolgardie to prospect for gold towards the east, and discovered gold in the bush at what was to become Kalgoorlie. Within weeks, thousands descended on 'Hannan's Hill'. Hannan left in 1894, and according to one account, returned to Melbourne briefly. On his return, he lived around Menzies and Mt. Ida. In 1897 he returned to Kalgoorlie, and was welcomed as a hero. He went back to Melbourne in 1904, and returned to WA around 1910 (aged 68!). He died in 1925 in Brunswick, Melbourne.

Paddy's return to Melbourne from Western Australia in 1894 matches that of Luke Green. Luke had left Beaufort, possibly in 1892, for Western Australia (did he intend to go to the 1892 goldrush to Coolgardie?). At the age of 25, in 1892, Luke married in Fremantle. His first child, Michael, was born in Fremantle the following year. He and his wife returned to Victoria in 1894, where they had their next child, and in 1895 they went back to Western Australia (probably with Patrick, Luke's younger brother). Between 1896 and 1900, Luke had three children in Boulder (next to Kalgoorlie) (Rose Veronica Green was the first white girl born in Boulder, according to his descendants). Patrick in 1898 married and had two children in Boulder. Patrick had a third child in 1903 in Menzies, north of Kalgoorlie.

One explanation for the similar movements and timing is simply that the Greens and Paddy Hannan followed the gold rushes, like thousands of men at that time. But the common age and heritage of Paddy and William, as well as the departure of both Paddy and Luke from WA in 1894 back to Victoria for a short period, suggests that they probably knew each other very well.
